One of the best ways to give a thoughtful gift is to personalize it—whether you add a monogram, a phrase, a portrait, or something else that makes it specific to your loved one, adding that little extra touch of personalization can really elevate a gift. And since Etsy is such a great resource for finding those special, handmade, customizable items, we chatted with Etsy's resident trend expert Dayna Isom Johnson for some intel on which gifts are sure to impress this year. These are the custom presents everyone is searching for, and there's a little something for everyone on your list here.
Personalized jewelry is pretty much always a hit, but according to Dayna, name necklaces are where it's really at: Etsy has seen more than 232,000 searches related to "name necklace." There are plenty of styles available, but this delicate bar necklace is a great and easily customizable choice—you can have phrases and other words engraved if you prefer, too.
Searches for pet and family portraits spiked 55 percent from August through October this year, according to Dayna. And it makes sense—when wouldn't a personalized illustration of your loved one's furry BFF go over well? These floral background portraits are a great option, but you can search Etsy for different styles as well.
So far this year, Etsy has seen over 91,000 searches for "personalized cutting boards," so to say they're popular is an understatement. Subsequently, you'll also find tons of listings for different styles. Get a monogram, a name, a word, a phrase, or even a whole handwritten recipe lettered on the board of your choice, and your recipient is sure to appreciate it.
Monograms and names aren't the only way to customize a gift—sometimes simply including their birthstone will do. To prove it, Etsy has seen a 25 percent spike in searches related to birthstone rings this year. These stackable rings are an especially cool option because you can gift multiple (your mom might love a set that represents hers and all her kids', for example).
A paper doll might not be the first gift that comes to mind, but according to Dayna, searches related to "custom paper dolls" have spiked 523 percent so far this year. That's a lot of paper dolls, and looking at this adorable custom family, you can totally see why.
People love to go all out for their pets, so it should come as no surprise that Etsy searches related to "custom dog tag" have spiked 79 percent this year. This is a small-but-thoughtful gift for the loved one who just adopted a new pet—go for an engraved wooden tag like this one, or search for a different style that suits them more.
This year alone, Etsy has seen more than 911,000 searches for "custom stamps." There are a few routes you can go here—get a beautifully hand-lettered address stamp, or go for something a little more unique like these custom portrait stamps—a cute holiday gift option for newlyweds, for sure.
Baby onesies are always a great gift for loved ones with brand new little ones, and searches for custom onesies have risen 24 percent on Etsy this year, according to Dayna. This geometric initial onesie is a stylish, gender-neutral option, but you can find plenty of personalized options out there, from monograms and names to even zodiac signs.
Okay, so Christmas cards are more of a gift for yourself that you send out on behalf of your own family, but with more than 32,000 searches for "custom holiday card" on Etsy so far in 2018 and adorable options like this custom portrait card, they're still a necessary inclusion.
And, if you have any close loved ones getting married after the holiday season (or celebrating a big anniversary!), a custom cake topper like this one could be a thoughtful gift. According to Dayna, there have been more than 47,000 searches for custom cake toppers so far this year, and there are tons of options to choose from no matter that the couples's style is.
