If you’re on this site in the first place, you know that no house is ever completely “finished.” Every living space is an ongoing project — whether you’re refining your art collection or refurbishing a bathroom — so there are sure to be things you’re overlooking. And a seriously underestimated aspect of home decor, in my humble opinion, is crystals.
I know what this sounds like. No, I'm not going to make you burn a full bush of sage or force you to analyze all twelve signs of the zodiac (though, TBH, I recommend that as well). Crystals aren’t just for people who read Tarot and get their auras read monthly — crystals are for all of us.
Why Crystals Have Gotten So Popular:
Storing and displaying the gemstones has been around forever, but they've hit a mainstream resurgence over the past year, which some credit to Gwyneth Paltrow's luxury wellness movement. Or, as Material Girl, Mystical World author Ruby Warrington suggests, it could be due to the fact that we're so tech-dependent all day, every day that we're craving something that connects us with nature.
Essentially, crystals are the new succulents, only they won’t prick your fingers and you can’t kill them if you forget about them for a month. They come in all shapes, sizes, and colors, so you can coordinate them with whatever rooms need a little something extra, and they make for colorful centerpieces on bureaus and coffee tables. They can even come as candle holders and mini statues.
How To Choose The Right Crystal For A Room:
Beyond being aesthetically pleasing, a lot of people keep crystals in their homes for the way the stones make them feel. While there hasn't been much research into the effectiveness of crystals on your health and overall wellbeing — Time cites studies crediting its benefits more to the placebo effect than anything else — crystal fans say certain stones give off different energies:
Add lapis lazuli to your living room to make conversations flow more seamlessly, as it's believed that blue stones help you communicate. Put some amethyst — a stone that soothes and makes you feel content — in your home office to destress as you take care of business. And, if you need to dial up the romance, drop a little rose quartz on your bedroom windowsill to channel its love energy.
Even if you don’t think you’re “channeling energy” or getting some kind of supernatural help from having crystals in your home, choosing one based on what your house needs can help you. In the sense that they can be visual reminders of what you want to improve in your life — without looking like an eyesore.
What You Should Keep In Mind:
Hear me out: If you have the confidence-boosting citrine in your workspace, you’ll remember to be more confident whenever it catches your eye. Carnelian is supposed to help you be more creative, so putting it in your living spaces could remind you to work on a new art project, or revisit that novel you’ve been putting off. If you need to keep the peace in your house and ease out of tension, black agate is a protecting, peace-giving stone that’ll remind you not to jump on your negative feelings about family members.
Whether you’re ready to dive headfirst into the “powers” of stones, or are just excited to channel some placebo effects, choose a crystal based on what you think you need, and grab a few that you just think are cool-looking. Many crystal experts believe that our stones find us: You’ll be drawn to the ones that you need, and sometimes you’ll misplace crystals when you no longer are in dire need of those energies.
