Designed in rainy Vancouver by automotive engineers, who themselves were frustrated by the constant expense of disposable umbrellas, the Carbon is not only meant to last for years, but it’s built to withstand 70 mph winds. For an idea of what that means, consider that a Category 1 hurricane gust is about 74 mph. (Not that I’m recommending you try it out in a hurricane, of course…but you could!)
This is one serious piece of engineering: The designers went back to basics and reimagined nearly every component and mechanism of an umbrella. Made of carbon, steel, and other durable materials, the Carbon resists being blown inside out, and it has rounded shields on the tips of its spokes, so they’ll never poke through the canopy fabric. It even has a car-inspired independent-suspension system, which is how it retains its shape against strong gusts.
All this is enough to convince me to shell out for this umbrella, but not only does it have muscle, it has style, too—because the canopy is interchangeable! That’s right: In less than three minutes, you can swap out the color or pattern of your umbrella as you please, to go with any outfit you have on or whatever mood you’re in. And it will still be as durable and protective as ever (with a built-in cover you can stash in the handle that keeps your umbrella from dripping when you go inside a restaurant or shop).
But wait, there’s more! You can also design your own canopy for a totally custom-for-you look. Truly, you'll never need another umbrella again. Now if only they could invent one that lets me know when I’m about to forget it and leave it behind somewhere.
