Forget Alexa or Google Home—thanks to IKEA, the latest thing to play music in your home can now be your bookshelf or lamp. Today at the Salone del Mobile furniture fair in Milan, IKEA will unveil SYMFONISK, its partnership with speaker company Sonos, featuring two new products that take multitasking to the next level.
The line consists of a wall-mounted shelf ($99) and a table lamp ($179), both equipped with Sonos's cult-favorite speakers. They won't be sold in the U.S. until August, according to a press release, so mark your calendars and plan a trek to the home store then.
"We knew from the start that we wanted to challenge the traditional high-tech aesthetics," says IKEA designer Iina Vuorivirta of the decision to merge two items in one. "The lamp-speaker partly springs from the idea of the fireplace—one single piece that spreads warm light as well as sound."
Both the lamp and bookshelf use Sonos's signature look in a more decorative way, with the speakers' mesh becoming the body of the lamp and the front of the shelf. It's long been Sonos's mission to create high-tech sound systems that are well-designed aesthetically as well as technically, so presenting speakers as decorative and functional items makes sense for the company. Plus, the multi-functional aspect of the designs speak to IKEA's mission to simplify and streamline homes of all sizes.
Beyond that, both companies emphasize the importance of sound in a space, a point we can't argue—after all, nothing sets the vibe like the right playlist. "IKEA and Sonos recognize the importance of great sound and its potential to positively affect life at home for the many people," says Tad Toulis, VP of Design at Sonos. "Since music and light are both instrumental in creating a sense of place, we developed a product that can deliver both."
