How would you describe the kitchen you're building at Rockefeller Center in New York?
It's a contemporary kitchen, the most contemporary kitchen so far for Kitchen of the Year. It's very California modern.
It's definitely going to have an indoor-outdoor feeling. It'll have a tremendous amount of glass and natural light. We put in as many doors and windows as possible.
Where did you start with this kitchen?
I started with the cabinetry, but I always get my inspiration from magazines. I've always been the guy who goes to the magazine stand, picks up 30 magazines, and sits on the floor in front of the television with a martini and just look for inspiration. I really went back and forth on whether or not I wanted to do a traditional kitchen or something more contemporary. I thought it should really reflect my personal aesthetic.
Will this kitchen be like yours at home?
Well, I have a lot of personality quirks that really affect my design aesthetic: I have OCD, I don't like chaos, I don't like clutter, I don't over accessorize. I really like things clean, neat, and minimal, and one of the reasons why I do keep accessories to a minimum is because I don't want things to gather dust. I'm not a carpet guy. I love the solid floors, wood or stone, with area rugs because I can lift them up and clean underneath. I think that carpet is generally kind of a host for dust and mold and that makes me a little crazy. I also tend to lean more modern; the indoor-outdoor feeling is something I have in most of my homes.
Do you spend a lot of time in your kitchen at home?
I don't cook, but I do spend a lot of time there. The kitchen is really like the living room for me. I did a bar area in my kitchen, and it never fails, when I have people over they're always sitting around the bar!
What's on your party playlist?
I always mix in seventies, eighties, and nineties music with old-school rap and current stuff. Britney, Lady Gaga, but then you know I have a real mix of stuff. For parties I try to keep it upbeat. As long as you have a lot of alcohol, you're good. People don't get bored.
Do you have a favorite kitchen appliance?
I have a Miele coffee maker with a warming drawer, which is amazing! I have coffee on demand. I also love my SubZero wine fridge.
What about your favorite gadget?
I have a wine aerator, which I love, because when I'm ready to have a glass of wine, I don't have to wait. Tamra Barney from The Real Housewives of Orange County gave it to me.
You don't cook, so what's in your fridge?
I have bottled water, beer (in case it's a beer night instead of a wine night), and olives for martinis.
Who's coming to NYC in July for KOTY?
I'm bringing four people from my office. We'll be there every night!
Will you bring your own playlist?
Yes, I'll be deejaying and bartending. I can multitask!
