When it comes to selecting colors for your home, I always recommend a few things: Think about how you want your space to feel, choose fabric colors first and paint last, and be aware that textures and patterns affect the impact of the color. Textures can soften dramatic tones and patterns can liven up softer palettes or break up bold strokes of color.
Now, here are three color combinations that are on my radar for 2014:
1. Purple & Green
Pantone has crowned Radiant Orchid the 2014 Color of the Year, an exciting but unsurprising announcement given that all of the colors found on a peacock's tail have been en vogue for several years now. Emerald Green was 2013's Color of the Year, so it makes sense that purple and green combinations were all the rage at this year's design shows. They are a lush, vivid pair. The success of this combination depends on the tones you select to get the look you want for your room. Amp up the drama with aubergine and deep teal tones, or soften the combination with lilac and blue-green hues.
2. Purple & Cobalt Blues
In my opinion, the cobalt blue color family is the runner-up to Radiant Orchid for 2014's Color of the Year. Blue is by far the most popular color in home design, and cobalt blues are the most serene of all blue tones. One modern approach that I noticed on display at High Point Market was the use of cobalt blue in leather upholstery. You don't have to buy new furniture to keep your decor fresh and modern — instead, apply bold strokes of color to classic lines. I love to take something very traditional and turn up the volume on it.
3. Clear & Rustic
Lucite has always been one of my favorite home decor elements. As both a texture and a color (or absence of one), it's an anomaly in the interior design space, but that doesn't mean it should be scary. I was thrilled to see it everywhere at High Point — gorgeously paired with rustic wood elements like Taracea's raw wood dining table with Lucite legs.
