There's nothing kids love more than building a fort, but while a fort constructed out of carefully strung-up sheets and blankets will always be a classic, there's a new kind of fort in town: The garden fort. And yes, it is basically exactly like mashing up the forts you know and love with The Secret Garden, right in your backyard. How is this possible, you ask? With HearthSong's Grow With Me Garden Fort kit, available on Amazon.
The kit comes with a 58-inch by 58-inch by 48-inch frame, a ground tarp, and four packets of seeds—two packets of sweet pea and two of Blue Lake beans. And of course, you can always swap those seeds out for your own seeds to grow the vine plants of your choice. In any case, this DIY project is pretty straightforward—to get the garden fort started, you just have to place the frame where you'd like it to go, plant the seeds around it, and wait for them to grow.
You might have to be a little patient though—according to HearthSong's website, it can take up to a whole season for the fort framework to actually be covered. And if you're unsure when the best time to plant your garden fort is, the brand recommends checking out the USDA's Plant Hardiness Zone Map. But not only will this garden fort become a fun—and gorgeous—hideaway for the kids once the plants have grown, your little ones will also be busy learning the joys of gardening in the process. A win-win all-around, right?
