Coming from someone living in a New York City apartment without the luxury of an HVAC system, I can tell you that window air conditioning units are quite the eyesore. As much of a blessing as they are to help me survive the rising heat in my walk-up, it's high time designers figure out how to make them a whole lot prettier than they are.
Just ask designer Genevieve Gorder. She's all too familiar with trying to design around a window unit that she's come up with an ingenious way to hide them. In an interview with PureWow, she revealed she uses mashrabiya screens as a chic way to cover up those cooling devices.
The screen helps disguise the window unit without blocking the air flow, as other "cover" treatments might. Genevieve recommends purchasing a freestanding screen from just about any home decor store—or even cutting your own to perfectly fit the size of the window and AC unit—though doing this might require the help of a contractor. There's no shame in calling in a pro!
Of course, screens can be a gamechanger in more ways than simply hiding an AC unit. In smaller spaces—like my open concept apartment, for example—we used the screen above to separate our living room from the kitchen to make it feel like separate spaces, while also maintaining the space's functionality.
