Buying new furniture or hanging a painting can certainly spruce up a room, but to truly transform a space, it all starts with the walls. But hiring someone to wallpaper or tile can add up quickly, and renters may face many restrictions on what they can even do.
Luckily, several products allow you to easily update your walls' appearance — without the commitment. Check out three of our favorites temporary choices below.
Although "peel-and-stick" doesn't usually scream sophistication, we've found the exception. Smart Tiles are an inexpensive alternative to ceramic and grout, that have the appearance of chic glass tiles. They're made with a gel substance that gives them a luxe three-dimensional look. Anyone can apply them — they come equipped with an adhesive and are placed on the wall like stickers. Prices start around $10, depending on the design and size you choose.

While this paneling looks expensive and complicated, it actually follows the same user-friendly principle as the Smart Tiles. The panels are made from real, naturally-aged wood, but have a built-in adhesive that attaches to blank walls. The company's founder says that in addition to being economical, Stikwood products are easy and fast to use, and can completely transform a wall in mere hours. Unfortunately, Stikwood isn't quite as temporary as some other solutions (it can be removed, but the walls may require minor repairs). The product comes in a variety of finishes and styles, from simple Charcoal to Reclaimed Sports Floor. Prices start at $10 per square foot, with a minimum order of 20 square feet ($200).

For a more traditional look, wallpaper works in almost any room. However, it can be difficult to apply and almost impossible to remove cleanly if you are renting or redesigning. Murals Your Way has the fix for this one. They created a removable wallpaper, called SmartStick, that peels on and off like a giant sticker. The company offers a huge variety of colors and patterns, the option to create your own, and each order is customized to perfectly fit your wall. Prices are comparable to Stikwood, starting at $192 for about 23 square feet.
