Anyone who has endeavored to pick out a white paint color knows that too many options is not always a good thing, and what starts as a “cheap and easy” way to freshen up a room can quickly turn into a week-long project involving multiple trips to the hardware store, buying enough sample cans to equal the cost of a full gallon, and 15 paint swatches on your wall that look different morning, noon, and night.
Husband and wife team Caleb and Natalie Ebel were more than familiar with this process, and finally decided to do something about it by launching Backdrop, a paint startup that aims to make the entire painting process easy, seamless, and affordable.
Backdrop is a direct-to-consumer brand with an e-commerce site, so that means no more trips to the hardware store. Paint and supplies are shipped directly to your home. The Ebels have also simplified one of the most challenging parts of painting: picking a color.
Backdrop offers only 50 paint colors in its collection, a highly curated palette Caleb and Natalie labored over with the goal of weeding out the exotic, the duplicates, and the unappealing. The result is a wide-ranging selection of light and neutrals as well as both muted and more saturated colors that are versatile and approachable.
Want to try a couple colors out before committing? Instead of a mini pot of paint, Backdrop will send you a foot-by-foot adhesive sample you can stick to your wall and look at in the actual space before committing. The stickers, which will only cost you $2 each, can be repositioned to try the color out in different light and areas of your home. No need to get all your supplies out before you’re ready to paint the whole room, and no awkward paint samples hanging out on your walls until you’re ready to commit.
Once you are ready to commit, Backdrop offers all the supplies you’ll need (and none that you won’t) to get the job done— helpful tips on their website. A gallon of their standard paint, which they describe as having a “highly desirable low-sheen, durable semi-matte” finish, costs $45, which is a fairly middle-of-the-road price for a product the Ebels describe as having five-star quality.
Need painting supplies? Backdrop has those too—$40 will get you an 11-piece essentials kit that includes everything from rollers to tape. And everything comes packaged in the chic, streamlined way we’ve come to expect from millennial-driven startups.
