Wish you could own a home that celebrates midcentury design? Frank Lloyd Wright's Boulter House lands on the market this Friday, complete with decade-appropriate decor. The house, listed at $695,000, combines classic tenets of Wright's design—radiant heating, natural materials, open-concept living—with the benefits of an urban zip code.
The newly restored two-story Usonian is located in the boho Clifton neighborhood of Cincinnati, home of the University of Cincinnati, Sacred Heart Academy, and a bustling downtown. The wooded property is the perfect backdrop for a home with 10-foot ceilings, designed to look like a modern ship.
Frank Lloyd Wright suggested Usonia as an alternative to "American" when describing homes, urban plans, and landscapes. He designed 60 single-family homes, including this Cincinnati property, for the Usonia concept, ensuring that each had heated floors to help with snow removal on his indoor/outdoor spaces and cantilevered balconies to improve heating and cooling.
The nearly 2,500-square-foot home is built with African and Philippine mahogany, Douglas fir, concrete, and glass. The natural materials are a focus of Wright's Usonia concept and feature in the home's several built-ins, including the 28-foot-long great hall that stretches through the property.
The four original bedrooms are Wright's traditional 98 square feet and formatted in the classic "four-foot" shape, furthering the shipbuilding aesthetic. The master suite was built as an addition in 1958 to accommodate a children's playroom and later converted by local architect Chris Magee.
The home was designed for Classics scholars Cedric G. and Patricia Neils Boulter in 1954. When completed in 1956, the expansive open-concept living space was filled with furnishings and accessories designed and selected by Wright himself. The Wright home collection from the original design is built into the price.
The property is listed with the Cincinnati Modern team at Keller Williams Advisors in Cincinnati. Ready to move into midcentury? You can see the listing before it opens at CincyMLS.com.
