Fans of the show Scandal know Kerry Washington best as the impeccably-clad, no-nonsense D.C. strategist Olivia Pope. But in Washington's real life, at home in New York, she trades power suits and political drama for coziness and family time. In the April issue of Architectural Digest, on newsstands now, Washington opens up about life in the Manhattan apartment she transformed from a bare-bones unit to a cozy, layered family home.
“We spent a lot of time looking for a place that had enough space for our whole crew, our posse,” Washington tells AD of the home she s with her husband, Nnamdi Asomugha, and their three children. Once they found it, the family turned to the in-house design team at RH, who translated their vision of an abode that was equal parts comfort and style.
In the home's spacious living room, the Cloud sofa (upholstered in a to-die-for cashmere) is Washington's favorite place to unwind after her performances ofAmerican Son, the broadway show in which she currently stars—and her reason for moving back to New York. Back, because Washington is a native of the Big Apple—born and raised in the Bronx.
As such, she feels a special appreciation for the Upper West Side apartment's floor-to-ceiling windows, which offer breathtaking views of the Manhattan skyline, Hudson river, and Washington's native borough. We're sure it's a detail the 30 people Washington hosts for Christmas and Thanksgiving appreciate, too—along with the ample cozy seating. Talk about the comforts of home.
